Compound Names of God Continued
Jehovah Nissi
The lesson of Jehovah Nissi is one of the wonderful exciting stories of the Bible! We hear this term frequently in the worship songs led by Brother and Sister Denney. So you will be well aware of what we are singing about, I am very happy to share it with you this week.
While the Children of Israel were in the wilderness, they were attacked by the Amalekites. Joshua led the army of Israel against the Amalekites and as long as Moses’ hands were up, the armies of Israel prevailed. However when his arms went down, the armies of the Amalekites prevailed. This was very crucial for Israel so there had to be a way to keep the victory going to Israel. Wonderfully, Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ hands and Joshua led the Israelites to victory.
Victory came, not because of Moses’ hands, but because he depended upon The Lord and The Lord gave the victory. After this great victory, Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah Nissi, which means Jehovah Our Banner.
Jehovah proved that He could bring victory to His people under any circumstance and against any foe. Exodus 14:13-14 “And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
Today, Jesus gives us victory over every enemy of our souls. I Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.“
Romans 8:37-39 “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!”
