Choosing Confidence
In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
Proverbs 14:26
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. 9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
Psalm 118:8
“Give me such love for God and men as will blot out all hatred and bitterness.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing
according to his will, he heareth us I John 5:14
When we look at the foundation scriptures for this week’s article, let us immediately recognize that to choose confidence, is to make a wise choice and by that wise choice, we bring a great quality into our lives, a quality that will assist us in every avenue of our lives. The Lord speaks to us from His Word and as He speaks to us, we are urged to place our confidence in God and His Marvelous Word. He uses such terms as “strong confidence,” and “confidence that we have in Him.” Having strong confidence in our Wonderful Lord will give us strength beyond that of any natural man.
It is so vital that we always remember to be very careful in whom we place our confidence. Proverbs 25:19 issues a stern warning, “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.” Keep in mind that those two problems bring pain that in some cases is never healed. A broken tooth is extremely painful and is often a problem even after it has been repaired. The foot out of joint brings almost constant pain and often is never corrected. We are warned not to place our confidence in an unfaithful person, especially in the time of trouble. As we consider these statements, something tells me that there are any number of good people who are saying, “I certainly wish I had known this, it would definitely have spared me great grief.” Learning the truth about where to or not to place our trust is one of the greatest of life’s lessons.
Every scripture reference today, reminds us strongly about placing our confidence in The Lord, rather than basically anyone or anything! ! This statement is strengthened in Hebrews 3:14 “For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end.” Not only is the beginning of our confidence important, but remaining stedfast unto the end is of utmost importance. May The Lord say of us what The Apostle Paul was able to say of the Corinthian Believers in II Corinthians 7:16 “I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.”
